HUGE SHOCKER: Jayson Werth got a seven-year $126 Million contract with the Nationals!
http://content.usatoday.com/communit...th-nationals/1
i still cant believe the years on this deal....it's a lot of money, but i figured he would get big money based on the scarcity of power-hitting OF's....but 7 years??? he will be 38 by the end of this deal....right now he is a power-speed guy, but in the next 2-3 years, that speed element will dissapear....
i guess they had to overpay to keep him in order to get him in DC....i would rather have Dunn for 4 years/50 million than Werth at this big of a contract
Yeah i was shocked by this one. I figured 4-5 years max but 7! I think the Nationals are overspending here.
maybe Obama can bail them out too??? hehe, i had to
Actually, thinking about this today...I believe the Nationals have Strasburg Fever. They were so blown away by Strasburg and his potential that they have convinced themselves they are the Yankees South!
Sure a team tries to get better, by signing players. But I merely think that the Nationals are trying lure more fans by signing Werth and Ankiel instead of looking for a way to get better. Sure they made a pitch for Lee, but I think they knew they never had a chance.
The Yankees' link with the Netherlands since 1981
The Netherlands: 2011 World Champions baseball, beating Cuba twice (4-1 and 2-1)!!!!!
At least they are spending.
I believe that Nats made a similar pitch to Tex a few years back too, knowing they didn't have much of a chance but put in an offer anyway trying to bring in some fans. I agree they don't have a great long term plan that I see in terms of players, but getting fans, season ticket holders, filling those luxury boxes, etc will go a long way towards giving them the money to spend on a long term plan.
