Infielder Alberto Callaspo and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a $2 million, one-year contract that avoided salary arbitration.
RickD broke it first here on Baseball Nation in the Official Hot Stove Report Thread.
As much as I despise the Angels, I think this was a very very good move by them. Sure Vernon Wells is owed a bunch of money, but he's not too old and he is exactly what the Angels need in that outfield. With Hank Conger ready for the bigs and Juan Rivera close to exiting the bigs due to being an older player this is a steal! Rivera still has 2-3 years left. Napoli was productive don't get me wrong, but they did have to give up something to land Wells.

I think the Angels got a great deal in the fact that it can really plug a hole in their OF. in the end it was Wells contract that made this an item the Jays wanted to take care of.
The Angels just got ripped off big time. If the Jays would have ate 1/2 of Well's contract, then they get a steal. But they are paying over 20 million per year for a player who is going to hit .260-.270 with 20 HR's and 80 RBI's. Then, on top of that, they gave up 2 very decent players in Napoli and Rivera.
Just look at last years stats:
Wells: .273 AVG, 31 HR's, 88 RBI's, .331 OBP, .515 SLG
Napoli: .238 AVG, 26 HR's, 68 RBI's, .316 OBP, .468 SLG
Rivera: .252 AVG, 15 HR's, 52 RBI's, .312 OBP, .409 SLG
Rivera and Napoli's power numbers should improve next season, espically considering the Jays is a very friendly hitters park.
Awesome deal for the Jays, awful deal for the Angels.

I know it's not gonna be a good year for them! Last year attendance was pretty low even with all the hoopla for the All-Star Game. There was games where entire sections on Club Level were empty and thats bad considering the service and how nice those seats are. I just have a feeling this season is going to be even worse. Sure Wells could turn out to be a great addition but one guy isn't gonna give the team wins
Rivera and Napoli are moving into a more friendly hitters park. The Blue Jays stadium is probably one of the best hitting stadiums in the AL, and it's not really even close.Just because a player produces those numbers one year doesn't mean they will be identical the next. You say Rivera and Napoli will improve next season, why won't Well's numbers improve to you next season? Because he is getting paid way more?
Wells numbers will drop because he is moving into a more pitcher friendly park.
Wells hasnt put up good numbers in the Angels stadium in his career.
I expect a pretty good drop in HR's next year for him. I would say a .260 AVG, .320 OBP, 23-26 HR's, 70-80 RBI's is pretty likley. While Rivera is nearing 20 HR's and Napoli is around 25-30. Angels are paying over 20 million per year for the next 4 seasons for a guy with a career .280/.329/.475 line (AVG/OBP/SLG) plus giving up 2 ML players and not getting any cash to cover the contract.
Please tell me again how this is a good deal for the Angels.
I never realized how identical Wells/Rivera were until after my 1st post in this thread. Angels didn't do anything this off-season so i'm not looking at the money whatsoever. Wells/Rivera straight up sure, but to throw in Napoli thats just bad for the Angels. They must be really impatient when it comes to Hank.
Anyways, everyone is making it seem like Vernon Wells is a pile of garbage who can't play ball. His numbers will NOT be identical to last years. I'm just being really optimistic on this deal. Wells, I know could hit for .300, drop 30 bombs and drive in 100 while producing an OBP of .360 plus. New team, new city, new beginning. Some players need it and I think this is good for Wells.
