Nice move.
Avila's nice, but if he hits like he did last year we've got a serious hole in the lineup.
Also, we've got no one to support Cabrera.
So they get Vmart to help out Miggy and occasionally fill in for Avila.
Great thinking.

Remember, they're not using him as a defensive catcher. Most of the time he'll DH.
Outfielder Ryan Raburn and the Detroit Tigers have agreed to a $3.4 million, two-year contract.
Tigers sign Gallaraga to a one year contract extension worth 2.3 million dollars.
After his almost no-hitter, Gallaraga never lived up to the expectations going 4-9 with a 4.49 ERA.
I think the guy has potential, even though he did not prove it last season. In 2008 he had a 13-7 record with a 3.83 ERA. I hope for him that he can reach those numbers again.

Is this confusing or what? First the Tigers sign Galarraga to a one year extension and now they designate him for assignment. Sure their deal with Penny has to do with it, but still it is confusing.

The Detroit Tigers have decided to convert Phil Coke from a set up man into a starting pitcher. Coke has some experience as a starting pitcher when he came up to the majors.
Last year, Coke had a 3.76 with 53 K's and 26 BB in 64.2 innings pitched.
I still curse the day that the Yankees traded him.

I don't know. This could work but there is no guarantee he will be able to make the conversion. Even looking at his minor league stats, I don't think Coke is that stellar of a pitcher. Only time will tell if it will work but nothing yet has shown me that the Yanks should regret the trade.
I think he'll make for a better reliever than a starter. But, at the same time, it wouldn't be all that bad to have a lefty in the rotation if it pans out pretty decently for them.
