There were rumours for over a week, but now the Rays seem to be close in finalizing a minor league deal with Hideki Matsui. If signed, he could be sent the AAA first to see if he hits well there. If that is the case, he can be called up.

The Tampa Bay rays signed Ryan Garko and opted him to Montgomery. Garko has several years of MLB experience.

Alex Cobb will be recalled from Triple-A Durham to start in place of the injured Jeff Niemann (leg) Saturday.

As expected. Cobb got the call over the talented but unready Chris Archer and Wade Davis, who will remain in the Rays bullpen. The 24-year-old has posted a 4.14 ERA while striking out over a batter per inning at Durham and is worthy of being picked up in AL-only formats.

The Rays announced that they acquired Drew Sutton from the Pirates for a player to be named. The infielder's stay in Pittsburgh was a short one; the Pirates acquired him from the Braves for cash considerations less than 24 hours ago. The Rays expect Sutton to join them tonight, at which point they'll make a corresponding move.

Sutton has a .258/.322/.403 batting line line in 178 MLB plate appearances with the Reds, Red Sox and Indians. The 28-year-old has MLB experience at all four infield positions and both corner outfield positions. He signed a minor league deal with Atlanta this past offseason and played 38 games for Triple-A Gwinnett before yesterday's trade.

The switch-hitting Sutton will provide Rays manager Joe Maddon with infield depth while Evan Longoria and Brandon Allen recover from their respective leg injuries. Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune first tweeted the news.

HOUSTON (AP) -- Houston outfielder Ben Francisco has been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named.

The 30-year-old Francisco came to Houston in a trade with Toronto on July 20. He hit .247 with two homers and five RBIs in 31 games for the Astros.

He has a .258 average with 47 homers and 181 RBIs his six-year career with Cleveland, Philadelphia and Toronto.
I really wonder what they need this guy for? Except for Sam Fuld, the other Rays' outfielders are hitting around .250.
They need someone who can hit, not another so so hitter with a .258 BA.

    Just my two cents.

Rays send Brignac to Colorado for cash and PTBNL

The Tampa Bay Rays sent IF/SS Reid Brignac to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for a player to be named later and cash considerations.

Brignac bounced around between Triple-A Durham and the Rays last season. He hit .095 in 16 games at the major-league level.

The 27-year-old was a second-round pick by the Rays in 2004.

The Rockies also made another move Thursday as they placed left-handed pitcher Edwar Cabrera on the 60-day disabled list with a shoulder injury. Cabrera spent most of last season in the minors, where he went 11-5 in 21 starts with Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Colorado Springs. He also started two games for the Rockies, giving up seven earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.
