Cashman Speaks
I am not sure what Brain Cashman is thinking. First he went after the Mets, saying that reliever Pedro Feliciano's impending shoulder surgery is due to overuse while with the Mets.
Now he is speaking ill of Joe Torre:
IMO this is a case of revisionist history. You give a manager crap (Pavano for example) to play with and then after he is gone, blame him for the mess."Did we have players here who were overused?" Did I meet with Joe? Yes. I met with Proctor, and told him, 'You'd better stop telling Joe you can pitch.' "There's no hypocrisy here. Then, referring to current Yankee manager Joe Girardi, Cashman said, "That's stuff I don't have to worry about anymore."
Seriously, Joe used what he had. He relied on the players who could perform because the other options the team brought in were garbage!
Cashman's acquisitions are doing fine so far.
Those who were complaining about the B acquisitions by Brian Cashman in the off season (Eric Chavez and Bartolo Colon, to name two) are silenced IMO. I think that Chavez, Colon and Garcia (except for last night) are doing a good job.
I can't get the big grin of my face when I see that the multi million acquisition of Hank Steinbrenner isn't living up to the expectations so far. I won't say that he stinks, but he is shaky at times (and then I am expressing myself mildly).

I agree. Freddy Garcia even kept the Yankees in the game last night.

Cashman... Contract extension or not?
Brian Cashman is in the final three months of his contract with the Yankees.
In general I think that he did a fine job over the last fourteen years. I admire him for the fact that he abandoned the Yankees' policy of trading away farm hands for big names. The only thing I blame him for is the fact that he put all his money on Cliff Lee last off season. He didn't really have a plan B. Sure he made some good moves by acquiring Colon and Garcia. The Yankees have been lucky before with acquisitions like that (Doc Gooden and Daryl Straweberry to name two). But IMO this has been sheer luck that these moves panned out pretty well (so far).
You can wonder if his position is as strong (if you can say so with an owner that always interferes) as it used to be after Hank Steinbrenner ignored his advice not to sign Soriano for $35 million.
There are some optons for the Yankees if they decide not to go on with Cashman. The Tigers' GM Dave Dombrowski (also in his final year). Dombrowski has signed for two teams that participated in World Series. The 1997 WS winners Florida Marlins and the 2006 Detroit Tigers. Internally there are also some options: head of pro scouting Billy Eppler, head of amateur scouting Damon Oppenheimer and minor league boss Mark Newman likely would be candidates.
Cashman could decide himself to quit of course. There might be some options for him in Houston where the new ownership may decide to hire a new GM. Seattle had a lot of interest in him in 2008. And Baltimore where Andy McPhail is in a vulnerable position in a season where the O's were expected to do better.
Personally I would like him to stay, but to be honest I think that his position has weakened after the signing of Soriano. On the other hand, after fourteen year, a new wind is just what this aging franchise may need.

With the Yankees budget I am sure there is other GM's that know enough about the game/players, to grow and buy the proper players.
Cashman has done great though, playoffs every year except one.

His time to go has come. I always liked Cashman and appreciated what he contributed to the great Yankees run these past 14 years but this last year, he just seems to be off his game. His treatment of Jeter and Posada...
No, time to go!

I think Cashman's a perfectly fine GM and wouldn't be surprised if they keep him around.
If he does leave, I could see Kim Ng being a great fit. She's got experience in pretty much every area of the job, has a strong reputation for analysis and contract negations, is extremely well connected, and has big-market experience. She's also worked under Cashman, and is currently working with Torre, both of whom speak very highly of her, so there's a Yankees connection already, and she grew up a Yankee fan.
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.
