We will have an Independent League team about 15 minutes from my house for the first time this season. The Sugar LAnd Skeeters are set to begin play in the Atlantic Coast League...or as the case is now, the not-so Atlantic Coast League

Very jealous. Would love to live closer to an independent league team.

German pitcher returns to indy team

German national team right-handed pitcher Martin Dewald is going to play a second season in independent league ball. He is going to return to the River City Rascals of the Frontier League, where he also began in 2011. In the middle of the season he had been traded to the Kansas City T-Bones of the American Association. Combined between these two teams he went 1-0 with an ERA of 4.18 in 25 games, all as a reliever. He struck out 17 in 23 2/3 innings, walking nine. He also was part of the German national team during the IBAF Baseball World Cup in Panama in October. The 25-year-old could be a starting pitcher this year.

San Rafael to play prison team

The San Rafael Pacifics of the North American Baseball League, have accepted an invitation from San Quentin State Prison baseball coach Kent Philpott to play an All-Star team of inmates May 19, 2012, Pacifics manager Mike Marshall announced Wednesday.

The game will serve as the official Opening Day of the San Quentin baseball season, as well as an important preseason game for the Pacifics as they prepare for their inaugural season. Philpott, in his 30th year working at the prison — and entering his 17th season as baseball coach — said he will select the 20 best players from the four San Quentin teams. He also anticipates a crowd of approximately 800 inmate fans to be on hand.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to play at San Quentin,” Marshall said. “If we can bring some competition and normalcy and the joy of the game, we are happy to do it. We look forward to it.”

The game is expected to take place approximately between 9 a.m. and Noon, with the East Gate to the prison opening at 8:30 a.m.

This weekend has been Opening weekend for the Skeeters here in town! I went last night with my wife to see the new ballpark. It was pretty neat.

Alex Cintron is playing 2B for the Skeeters, and the others are just minor leaguers who didnt pan out...

I know about the Frontier League. In fact, there's plans to bring a new FL team to Bridgeport, WV ... just about 30 minutes from where I live. I'll definitely be checking it out once they get here.

"Tonight was the exact same thing," Bundy said. "Going into each
start, they want me to work on my changeup. I'm going out there
throwing changeups and curveballs when I don't even need to."

Translation: Hitters can't even touch Bundy's
fastball, never mind get wood on a curve.
