Dress code...well if he is a player and refuses to wear the team uniform....
My curiosity is fueled by the notion something to the effect that "rules are rules and you know what they are going in."

If your star player violates those rules, why should he be exempt? I don't really know how strict the Yankees are about their no-facial hair rule, but let's say they are procrustean, and Robinson Cano grows a beard, the reasons for which are nobody's business but his own. Shouldn't "rules are rules" be applied in this situation?

No big deal. I just wonder if we sometimes speak with forked tongues.

As for uniforms, what if the brass says you've got to wear your pants/socks/stirrups the old-fashioned way, and you choose not to. Suspension?

I worked for a company that would not allow you to grow facial hair. You could have a beard/mustache when you came in but you could not grow one because they thought the growth process was unprofessional looking. (I worked on cars!)

I got around it by growing a beard on my 2 week vacation and that was acceptable!

I think suspension for a dress code can be a bit much but have no problem with a fine, calling the guy out, etc. If you know the teams rules, you should endeavor to follow them. Would I have suspended the guy for clothing....no. I would have fined him heavily for violating team policies before moving it up to the suspension route.

I'm with Sutton on this one. It's a professional job he's hired to do, why shouldn't he look professional? I understand that they have the dress code of the logo-emblazoned polo shirt, but I find that a little silly. I could understand if he were UNDER-dressing, but OVER-dressing? That's a silly thing to suspend a guy for. I mean, come on, man.
