Atlanta Braves Pastornicky error vs Reds ?

Just wondering what everybody elses take is on the Error by Tyler Pastornicky in last nights game vs. the Reds. I was listening to the radio broadcast, and the announcers were going on and on about how it was a "boneheaded" play and how bad Pastornicky probably felt about it. Obviously, I did not see it until I watched Quick Pitch later in the evening, but after seeing the replay, I thought at least part of the blame should lie with Dan Uggla, who, in my opinion, should have been covering the bag at 2nd. If Uggla covers the bag, the toss is on the money and there's no error.

    I did not see it.

Do you have a link to the video?

Yeah, player throws where he is suppose to and always gets the error.

That's all Dan Uggla. Why did he stop before getting to the bag? Pastornicky had no chance of fielding the ball and getting to the base in time. What was Uggla thinking???

    I see what you mean.

Since the runners were on the go to begin with, it would appear that Uggla assumed that the runner was going to beat him to the bag anyway, so he did not even try to get there.

The runner was going to beat him, but isn't it standard practice to get over there anyway? I always liked Uggla but it seems to me he should have scooted over there.

That one was all on Uggla!

Even with the runner on the move, Pastornicky fields the ball and is ready to make a short toss with the runners still about 10 feet from 2B. Uggla? With two outs and a ball hit to his right, he HAS to make a quick move towards 2B and get to that bag! Even with Pastornicky's throw (that was about 3 feet to the OF side of the bag), if Uggla does HIS JOB, it is an out and the inning is over.

Uggla has always been a poor defensive 2B. Simply does not have the great hands or range that a middle infielder should have. On this play, it was a straight-up mental mistake by Uggla.

Please don't even start to think that the rookie SS should have just thought to make the throw to 1B with the runners on the move. Uggla is the Vet and his job is to help his rookie keystone partner every chance he gets. Uggla failed!
