Yankees and Red Sox battling for new players

New York Yankees make their bid with a 7-year offer to pitcher Cliff Lee who was with the Texas Rangers last season and is a free agent. The Red Sox have not been to the playoffs the past two seasons. The Yankees originally offered Lee six years for $140 million and the offer is apparently being raised. The Boston Red Sox have signed free agent outfielder Carl Crawford to a 7-year $140 million deal. He played last season at Tampa Bay.

The Red Sux also picked up Gonzalez. hey are making a huge effort to improve and the Yanks will be hard pressed to win it all this year.

Even if the Yanks sign Lee....and that's still a big "if"... I think the Sox have definitely won the bidding war for 2011. The Yanks are in a position now where they think they must sign Lee just to stay competitive in the AL East. This kinda puts them between the proverbial rock and hard place because the Rangers are fighting to keep Lee. Taxes might make the difference in favor of the Rangers. This is really becoming an interesting scenario.-BH

....must sign Lee to stay competitive.

It is not the end of the world if they do not compete. It wouldn't hurt. Maybe it will open their eyes that spending isn't the only way to build a team.
