Reds and Votto close to mega deal

According to MLB.com and traderumors.com the Cincinnati Reds and Joe Votto are close to signing a +200 MM deal.
The length of the deal isn't known yet. If the Reds sign Votto, that would prevent him from testing the market after the 2013 season.

That is certainly interesting, and makes me glad that the Cubs went out and got Rizzo as opposed to hoping Votto hit the market. I am curious how a deal that large will affect Cincy going forward financially. Seems likely to be an awfully high percentage of the payroll tied up in one player.

I rather would invest that money on a pitcher or two. Or player development otherwise.

10 yr 225 mil (counts the 2 years he still had on his current contract)

Joey Votto won't hit the open market. Votto signs a 10-year, $225m extension w/#Reds. New money starts in 2014

Cincy's payroll was the highest it has ever been in 2011 at 80 million. Even if the payroll jumps by 20 million in the next couple of seasons, Votto is going to be over 20% of the team's payroll. That's never a good thing.

One thing i read was CIN TV contract over after 2016 season. They are expecting huge pay day then so that basically pay for Votto. Cubs i dont think can get new TV contract till after 2019 season

Yeah when the Cubs finally can pull their games from WGN and Comcast and form their own channel the payroll should get a nice boost.

I'm always sceptical of big contracts like this, but in the current market it seems like you have to sign players for a long time and for a lot of money to keep them. The times are changing.
