Instant replay not extended for 2012 season

Major League Baseball announced that the plans for an extension of the instant replay will be put back on the shelfs again.

Baseball had sought to increase video reviews this season to include trapped balls, fair-or-foul rulings down the lines and fan interference all over the ballpark.

According to Sports Illustrated, MLB could not reach an acceptable set of agreements with the umpires and the players union.

    No real surprise there.

Awesome! The longer this is delayed the better.

Instant Replay has no place in Major League Baseball, or any baseball for that matter. Disputing the umpires' calls has become part of American pastime, why take that away?

To a certain extend I agree with you. But on the other hand... Remember the 2010 season when Detroit's Armando Galarraga almost pitched a perfect game? I could have killed that umpire. In cases like that an instant reply should be used.

    I hope it never happens.

You guys are bang on. I am a purist. Let the Umps make the call. You win some, you lose some. You yell at the Umps when you lose some. Baseball the way it was meant to be played!

Have to go with Mr Baseball here. I'm quite sure there is a possibility that some pitcher who threw a perfect game benefited from a blown call.

I sort of think I Am a purist at heart, but things do change over time. I think a reasonable compromise to getting it exactly correct and keeping the human element would be to give each manager a number of challenges to plays that could be reviewed. If the challenge is correct, the manager would retain it. If the challenge is incorrect you could add some additional negative. Lose a challenge, add a base, reduce or increase an out, etc.

I am against replay on balls and strikes; the pitching and hitting component is the essence of the game and would slow the game down tremendously. Many people already feel the game is too slow. This would add to the mix. I am talking about fair and foul balls; catch or no catch, etc.

Hey, flags would make us all fatter with the extra trips to the fridge.

Nothing with the human element involved can be perfect including umps and refs.

The average American in 2012 has the attention span of a goldfish. Do you honestly think they'll want to sit around for an extra 5-10 minutes waiting for a call to be reviewed by the umpires? I don't think so. This isn't the NFL. We can't penalize teams for challenging a call, especially with the punishments you've proposed.

You want a fair game, correct? If this is true, wouldn't it be counter-productive to reward the other team a free base based on a failed challenge by the manager?
