I think he's a much better candidate than a lot of people realize. Offensively, he compares favorably with a lot of HoF catchers, but he's also comparable to Ted Simmons, who never got much of a look. That could be what hurts Posada as well; if he was seen as a plus defender his bat would be more than enough to carry his candidacy, but he's more of an adequate defender. Not a bad one, except at the tail end of his career, but most of the guys who were comparable hitters to him were better defenders. He was also a contemporary of Piazza, who was probably the best hitting catcher in MLB history, and I-Rod, who combined premium defense with a pretty good bat and a long career.
He's a rare breed; an underrated Yankee.
