One of the greatest Lefthanded pitchers in White Sox history, Billy Pierce won 211 games in his career with the White Sox and Giants. Known for his classic duels with Whitey Ford, Pierce beat the Yankees 25 times in his career. He pitched 4 one hitters and 2 two hitters in his career. In 1958, he came within one out of a perfect game.
He was a 7 time all star, starting the game 3 times. He won 20 games twice, led the league in ERA and Strikeouts once each.
His number 19 is retired by the White Sox.
After being traded to the Giants in 1962, he helped them win the NL pennant that year and faced the Yankees in the World series.
Pierce retired after the 1964 season. At the time of his retirement, he was in the top ten of most pitching categories for lefthanders.
After retirement, he worked as a tv commentator for the White Sox and as a scout for them. He also was a partner in car dealerships and a stockbroker.
Now retired, Pierce lives in Chicago with his wife of 51 years. He works in the Sox community relations department and heads the Chicago Baseball Cancer Charities.

One additional footnote about Billy...During the decade of the 50s, Billy was the only left-hander to post a seasonal ERA of less than 2.00. He led the AL in that category in 1955 with a 1.97ERA.-BH
