Closed New Ballot: 1970 Veterans Committee Ballot

Welcome back to the Virtual HOF Series where YOU decide who is HOF worthy.

    1970 Veterans Committee Ballot

This is a great jumping on point.

You can click on a name and find out the baseball-reference information on each player.

Congrats to Duke Sniderwho received 100% of the vote and was elected on the 1970 BBWAA Ballot.

Ok just a reminder, these are the winners from past elections: HOF Inductees

We are now staying with 1970. You can vote for up to 3 players. Anyone not elected is gone like Yesterdays news. This is an exact replica of the 1970 Veterans Committee Ballot minus past winners.

Voting closes Sun. August 7th at 7 am.

    Earle Combs
    Ford Frick
    Jesse Haines

Ford Frick doesn't get my vote, only because of the infamous asterisk.

The Yankees' link with the Netherlands since 1981

The Netherlands: 2011 World Champions baseball, beating Cuba twice (4-1 and 2-1)!!!!!

Frick - yes - He was instrumental in the Hall of Fame becoming a reality, he played an important role in the breaking of the colour barrier, and he was overall an important figure in the growth of baseball to a much broader audience.

The asterisk issue is a non-issue for me - there never was an asterisk in any official MLB record book. Frick had no authority over any such book, so there was no way he could make a ruling. What Frick did, essentially, was voicing an opinion. Some books agreed with his opinion and listed the records with an asterisk, while others did not. The asterisk found its way into the mythology of baseball, despite the fact that Frick himself confirmed that no asterisk had ever been placed next to 61 in any official record. In reality, Frick voiced an opinion that the different context in which the two records were set should be recognized - a valid opinion, if perhaps biased by his friendship with Ruth - and some sportswriters who agreed with him felt the asterisk was an appropriate method of doing so.

Combs and Haynes are both no for me.

Combs is the type of player who was good enough that if he'd sustained his level over a longer career over a longer career, I might vote for him, but he didn't reach the impact-level needed for a short-career HoFer. Haynes was the opposite; he had a long career, but I don't think he stood out enough to get the nod.

    Frick for pioneering=yes

Combs is borderline but I'll give him a yes also.

No to Haines, only reason he is in the HOF is because of Frankie Frisch.
