Will the Pirates Finally Go Big at the Trade Deadline?

It's almost been 20 years now for the suffering Bucs' and their few faithful fans. Last year they teased us, as they rose up with a 51-44 record while holding first place in the NL Central, only to tank in the second half of the season.
Maybe one of the biggest reasons they weren't able to keep up the steam is because they completely flopped at the trade deadline. The only notable player they ended up with was an extremely washed-up Derek Lee, who virtually did absolutely nothing

What comes to mind when I say "NL Central"? I'm sure for many of you, phrases like "weak" and "worst division in baseball" probably pop up in your head first. Well, I'm not so sure these words accurately describe what the NL Central really is. While it may not be the best, it's a very exciting and action-packed division, with four teams still in easy reaching distance of the division title. If you were to tell the average MLB fan that the Pittsburgh Pirates (57-105 last season) would be 51-45 and in a close battle for the lead of the NL Central in late July, they would have laughed in your face long and hard. In fact, they would have probably hit you over the head, too. Even Pirates fans had never expected them to be six wins away from tieing their win total from last year in late July. So we are about two months into the 2011 baseball season, and the Pirates have a 28-29 record, which isn't terrible considering we are only one game back from getting to .500. As long as we are able to keep the record to as close as .500 as possible, things may not be so bad this season.

It was another series lost for the Bucs, as they dropped two of three to the defending champion San Fransisco Giants. Coming off of a strong 2-1 series win over the Nats, the Pirates just weren't able to get this one. They dropped to 11-14 after the series.
