Before accepting the job as Commissioner of Baseball, Vincent consulted with Bart Giamatti's widow, Toni, to make sure she thought it was appropriate for him to do so. She said yes. Vincent did as well. Thus one friend replaced another.

Vincent was born on May 29, 1938 in Waterbury, Connecticut. After attending The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, Vincent graduated with honors from Williams College in 1960 and received his law degree from Yale in 1963. He was quite the athlete as a youth, excelling in both track and field and football. However, a college prank gone wrong ended his athletic future and nearly took his ability to walk. Locked in his dorm room, he scooted out his 4h story window and slipped. His spent the next 3 months in traction with a crushed spine and legs paralyzed from the fall. Told he would never walk again, he overcame the diagnosis, but walked with a cane ever after.

After law school, Vincent became a partner in the law firm of Caplin & Drysdale, located in Washington, D.C. He also served for a time as the Associate Director of the Division of Corporation Finance of the SEC.

Beginning in 1978, Vincent served as the chairman of Columbia Pictures. In 1982 he became the vice chairman of Coca-Cola. In April 1986, he was promoted to the position of Executive Vice President of the Coca-Cola Company, which placed him in charge over all of the company's entertainment activities.

A little over a month after becoming commissioner of baseball, the 1989 Earthquake hit during the World Series in San Francisco. Game 3 was postponed and resumed 10 days later under protest from the Mayor of San Francisco. In my opinion, options were limited and Vincent made the best of a bad situation.

1989 ended with controversy and began the same way due to a lockout that saw 32 games and Spring Training cancelled. Vincent helped negotiate a basic agreement and the season was saved.

He followed up a few months later by issuing George Steinbrenner a lifetime ban for he paid a gambler $40,000 for dirt on Dave Winfield.

Expansion was also a major focus of Fay Vincent's term and two new National League teams Denver and Miami) were established bringing the number of Major League Baseball franchises to twenty-eight. He also declared that the American League would receive $42 million of the National League's $190 million in expansion revenue but in return, the American League would provide players in the National League expansion draft.

His relationship with baseball's owners was always tenuous at best; he resigned in 1992 after the owners gave him an 18–9 no confidence vote.

The second 1962 Major League Baseball All-Star Game was the 33rd playing of Major League Baseball's annual midsummer exhibition game. The game took place at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, home of the National League's Chicago Cubs. The American League emerged triumphant as they finally broke out of a five game slump with nine runs. The nine runs equaled their total for the previous five games. The AL also racked ten hits. Their victory kept the National League from tying the All-Star series at 16-16. The AL also had home runs by Pete Runnels, Leon Wagner and Rocky Colavito. A highlight of the game was the first presentation of the Arch Ward Trophy to the MVPs of each All-Star Game. It was first presented in 1962 as a tribute to the man who founded the All-Star Game in 1933. That first presentation went to Leon Wagner of the Los Angeles Angels (second game MVP) and to Maury Wills of the Los Angeles Dodgers (first game MVP), because two Midsummer Classics were played.
As noticed and documented by John Taube of PSA/DNA, “during our examination of the bat, we noticed a circular area .75 inches wide in the center of the top barrel. The finish in the area has also been touched up to mask the circular area. Alterations of this nature indicate the barrel has been drilled and filled with cork….we had the barrel x-rayed and (it) confirms that the barrel has been drilled and filled with cork…this is the first corked bat of Mantle that we have seen or heard of”.

In his autobiography, then Minnesota Twins equipment manager Ray Crump admitted that he had corked some bats for Mickey. Until now, none of these bats have surfaced…taking nothing away from the icon and legend of Mickey Mantle, this is indeed a one of a kind piece of NY Yankees and baseball history…a Mantle corked gamer. Manuf: H&B. Model Number: M110 Length: 35 in Weight: 32.6 oz Labeling Period: 1964 Wood: Ash Finish: Standard. Condition: Uncracked.

1964 saw Mantle hit .303 with 35 home runs and he led the league with a 1.015 OPS.
