Opening Week is coming to a close and that means one thing: fantasy owners are scrambling because Cano hasn't hit a home run yet and Mike Trout is hitting below .200! Be careful not to overreact. Be patient. Hitters are only 20 AB's into the season, and pitchers still have 30 or so starts to work on their mechanics.

I thought I might take a page out of the Fangraphs book, and give ways to be successful in winning specific categories in a standard rotisserie scoring league. Today's category is ERA. This one is probably the hardest to master and be successful in other pitching categories. Now remember that these tips are ways to win the category, not just be at the top of your league.

Step 1: Strong Core - In order to win this category, you need at least three Tier 1/Tier 2 Starting Pitchers on your roster right ...

    1. Watch out for seasoned veterans in trades

A lot of beginners have a tenancy to appear overly anxious during trade negotiations, and believe me, that's the easiest way for a veteran to take advantage of your inexperience. Guys that have been around are going to prey on newcomers, trying to squeeze every ounce of talent from you before you even have a chance to get your feet wet. A good fantasy trader is like a good salesman, effective and incredibly misleading. They'll make you feel like they're doing you a favor by making the swap, and even appear uninterested to sweeten the deal. Watch out for these guys!

    2. Never release an active closer

Last season in the Baseball Nation Dynasty League, I had both John Axford and Health Bell ...

This is the eighth contribution in a series about the various minor leagues that existed through the decades.

This time I will pay attention to the Arkansas State League/Arkansas-Missouri League

    Arkansas State League/Arkansas-Missouri League

The Arkansas State League/Arkansas-Missouri League was a professional baseball, Class D minor league that operated from 1934 until 1940. The league was one of only three Depression-era leagues to exist in the state, the others being the Northeast Arkansas League and the Cotton States League.
The Arkansas State League had it's fourth run, starting in 1934. The league only lasted two seasons, but instead of folding, the league renamed itself in 1936 and became the Arkansas-Missouri League. It paralleled a rapid growth in professional baseball minor leagues around the country and ...

    A. Bartlett Giamatti (1938 - 1989)

    7th commissioner of baseball.

    Tenure: (1989)

    A. Bartlett Giamatti was unanimously elected to a five-year term as baseball's 7th Commissioner on September 8, 1988 by all 26 club owners. He took over the commissioner's post on March 1, 1989

His tenure would last just 154 days.

Giamatti was born in Boston, MA on April 4, 1938. He was a diehard Boston Red Sox fan and lover of baseball in general. After graduating from South Hadley High School, Giamatti attended Yale University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in English in 1960. Not resting on his laurels, Giamatti went on to receive a Ph.D. from Yale in Comparative Literature in 1964.

    After he received ...

    Peter Ueberroth (1937 - Present)

    6th commissioner of baseball.

    Tenure: (1984 - 1989)

With Bowie Kuhn's tenure as commissioner now a decided factor, the owners began looking for a successor. He would be sitting on his hands for some time. Having agreed that Bowie Kuhn could retire at the end of the 1984 season, the new candidate would have to wait until then to start. The owners turned to Peter Ueberroth as that candidate. He was unanimously hired on March 3, 1984 but did not start until October 1, 1984.

Peter grew up in northern California. In high school, he excelled at football, baseball and swimming. He was a good enough athlete that he earned a scholarship to San Jose State University. He competed but just missed out on being a part of the 1956 Olympic ...
