I just saw a broadcast on National Geographic Channel about the demolition of Yankee Stadium. Pretty interesting. There are a lot of things that need to be removed. Things you normally don't think of.

I can't watch it. Even though i'm not a Yankees fan. This breaks my heart. Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris did something so amazing and thats what attached me to that stadium, watching the movie and reading books on them two brought me really close to that stadium. I can't believe the house that Ruth built is being demolished. Sad story, they should turn it into a museum of Yankee Baseball History. Just my opinion though. Put a roof over it of course.

I agree on that. But not every club is cherishing its historic park like the Red Sox.

I remember a few years back when there was a movement afoot in Boston to replace Fenway Park. As much as it has limitations -- and always will perhaps now that it is almost 100 years old -- I'm glad they chose ultimately to retrofit it as best as possible.

Of course, the ticket prices are exclusive for most folks, but they do seem to fill the park every game.

Here's my question -- was a new Yankee Stadium essential?

Not in my opinion. The only ones who wanted a new stadium were the Steinbrenners, so they could sell/rent more luxury suites.
How much I like the big hall at the entrance of the Stadium, I still think they should have kept playing in Yankee Stadium II.

I don't think so. The wife and I went up to the Bronx to catch a game during the ballpark's last season. The concourses were tight, and there weren't as many facilities (food stands, merchandise stands, bathrooms) as the newer parks, but really thought it was still in good shape. Even as a Sox fan, it was easy to appreciate the old park.... thinking how Mantle played over there, Ruth over there, Gehrig, Berra, etc.

It was a money grab. They probably felt like their potential for revenue was limited by the old park. They chose to build a new one with all the bells and whistles. If you can get the tax paying public to pick up a large chunk.... why not?

Yeah I agree. I think they could have keep the original, maybe do what they did in the 70's...move out for a couple years, massively upgrade, move back in.

They needed to make it a museum. I remember back in like '05 or something they were talking about adding a retractable roof to the old Yankees stadium. They should of added a roof, retractable or not and kept Old Yankees Stadium as the Hall of Fame of Yankees Baseball.
