Mota suspended 100 games for positive test

Second steroid violation for Giants reliever; first was in 2006

By Bobbie Dittmeier / MLB.com

Giants reliever Guillermo Mota was suspended Monday for 100 games after testing positive for clenbuterol, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, the Office of the Commissioner announced.
The suspension of Mota, who received a 50-game ban for a performance-enhancing substance violation in November 2006, is effective immediately.

The Giants have not yet commented on the suspension.

Mota, 38, is 0-1 with a 5.06 ERA in nine appearances in his third season with San Francisco, the seventh team he has played for in his 14-year Major League career. He pitched in 52 games last season and had a 3.81 ERA in 80 1/3 innings.

The right-hander was with the Mets when he was suspended the first time and missed the first 50 games of the 2007 season.

The drug Mota used is called Clenbuterol, which is used by sufferers of breathing disorders as a decongestant. However, it can -- and has -- been used for performance-enhancing means. Cyclist Alberto Contador of Spain was stripped of his 2010 Tour de France title after he tested positive for the drug. Also, Kirk Radomski, a major witness in the Mitchell Report, admitted to distributing Clenbuterol to dozens of former and current MLB players.

Mota is just the third player to be penalized twice for drug violations. The other two were Manny Ramirez and Eliezer Alfonzo.

Good, I hope the Giants cut him and his career ends in shame! Zero Tolerance.

It would really suck to be caught using PED's and have a near LgAvg ERA of 3.92:)

I find it pure remarkable that only 3 players have 2 strikes against them.

Great. I still think that players caught for asecond time should be banned for life.

I wish there was a list of the testing schedule, complete with the players tested, made available to the public.

Don't know why, I'd still be very skeptical of any info released by MLB.

Grandfather in a year waiting period. Set up a 1 strike rule banning players. Get an honest independent tester that don't have any interference from MLB. BINGO!
