I guess it's clue time...in his rookie year he batted .322, poled 34 HRs, and drove in 144 runs...by far his best year in the majors....good enough to earn him Rookie of the Year honors for the AL. His career lasted 13 years and he finished with a .270 BA LT( Where are ya, BoSox fans??)-BH

Too easy, OS...but let's let someone else play. I can say that your man's story is one of the saddest and most tragic in the history of MLB. If I'm not mistaken he was one of the youngest players to reach 100 career HRs.-BH

OK...I guess a couple of clues are necessary. This guy was one of those rare players who actually played in part or all of four decades(25 years continuously). He was a prolific base stealer. Many who have studied the game think he may have been one of the best all-round players to ever don a uniform. He compiled well over 3000 hits and batted well over.300 in his career.....all this while being uglier than sin!!..:veryhappy:-BH

I think that you are right. I was drawing a blank even after Bob's hints. I guess the Chicago uniform threw me off. Even though he spent more years with the Sox, I always think of Collins as a member of Mack's $100000 infield.

In a way, this is a mean one. This baseball personality is better known worldwide for what he did outside of baseball. But one city will always fondly remember his contribution to baseball, too.

It is pretty clear from your comment that you do know it, Bob. If nobody else names him, why don't you tomorrow? You might want to add what my hometown owes to him, baseballwise.

Well, Yankee fan sober's home town is San Diego, CA....and they have had the Padres since 1969. The man in sd's photo is Mr. Ray Kroc...the man who turned MacDonald's into a household word. He was also a big-time Cubs fan having been born and raised in Illinois, but he was more importantly a big baseball fan period. The Padres wallowed in the cellar or close to it for 5 years and were put up for sale in 1974. A Wash,D.C. group was going to purchase them and Mr. Kroc stepped in and bought the team at the last minute vowing to keep it where it was. He admitted he wasn't buying the team to make money but because he loved baseball and the team would be his hobby. On opening night of his first season, Kroc seized the public-address microphone in the eighth inning of a 9-2 loss to Houston and announced, “I have never seen such stupid ballplaying in my life.”...and the crowd roared their approval...and from then on he worked hard at trying to make the Padres a better team. Little wonder San Diegans loved the man...right, sd?..:)-BH

You said it. My only regret is that he died 9 months before the Padres got to the World Series in 84.
I also feel that their stadium should have been named after him instead of what a friend of mine calls a "corrupt pet supply company".

Vic Willis??-BH

and no.

This HOF-er had a 326-194 record with a 2.35 ERA.

The photo I have posted is one of his younger years. When I post another one showing him at a later stage in his career, I bet you will recognize him immediately.

His nickname referred to the town he was from.

Enough clues. Just give it a shot.
