The best pitcher the Milwaukee Braves have ever had. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 until being discharged in 1946, losing what could have been a very productive couple of years. Spahn had many great years including 1947 when he went 21-10 with 22 complete games, 7 shutouts and a 2.33 ERA. 1953 was another great year for Spahn that saw him finish with a 23-7 record,, with 24 complete games, five shutouts and a 2.10 ERA. He ended his career with 356 wins, 229 losses, 3.05 ERA, 2,493 strikeouts, and 63 shutouts."....from the Bleacher Report website

He is not (is that a requirement for this thread?).
But he holds a significant place in the leader boards -- for the pre-162-game seasons at least -- for his number of plate appearances in a single season (over several consecutive seasons in fact).
I love his name, though, which belies his lifetime .291 average in 11 seasons, mostly with the Cardinals.
Here's another picture from later in his career.

You got it, Bob.
Taylor Douthit's 752 plate appearances for the Cardinals in 1928 is the most ever for a player in the 154-game season. Prior to the MLB schedule expanding to 162 games, only three other layers had more than 750 PS in a season, Frank Crosetti (757 in 1938), Dom DiMaggio (756 in 1948), and Woody English (755 in 1930). But each of them played in more than 154 games in those seasons.
So, Mr. Douthit holds a record unlikely to be broken.

Is it Tommy Thevenow?
As mentioned previously, Donie Bush and Doc Cramer each put together four consecutive homerless seasons. This enabled them to compile long at bat streaks without a homer. However, the record belongs to Tommy Thevenow, a National League infielder, who went from September 24, 1926 to the end of his career in 1938 without a four-base blow - a streak of 3347 at bats. He hit two home runs, both early in his career, and both were inside-the-park jobs.

It took me a while to place the pictures with the hints. It is Whiz Kid Eddie Waitkus.
Here is the story behind that last pic.
Just a few years into the start of what seemed a very promising career, Waitkus was shot in the chest by Ruth Ann Steinhagen, an obsessed fan, on June 14, 1949, at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago.[1] Steinhagen had become infatuated with him when he was a Cub, but seeing him every day in-season apparently kept her obsession in check. Once he was traded to the Phillies and would only be in Chicago 11 games in the season, her obsession grew to dangerous proportions. She checked into the hotel using the alias of a former high school classmate of his, and left a note at the desk asking him to come to her hotel room on an urgent matter. She then shot him with a rifle, the bullet barely missing his heart. He nearly died several times on the operating table before the bullet was successfully removed. Steinhagen never stood trial, but instead was confined to a mental institution. Steinhagen's obsession and stalking was covered at length in one of the Fireside Book of Baseball entries.
and this concerning the Roy Hobbs reference.
Author Bernard Malamud, who was not a baseball fan himself, took the basic elements of the Waitkus story and wove them along with various baseball legends (notably Joe Jackson) into a novel, a morality tale called The Natural.[3] The book was published in 1952, and was eventually made into a film that was released in 1984.

That's Babe Herman.
soberdennis
07-09-2012, 02:22 PM
Herman was well known for his poor fielding and as part of the "Daffiness Boys". He also once doubled into a double play.
Herman's name is associated with a baserunning gaffe during his rookie year. During a game on August 15, 1926, at Ebbets Field against the Boston Braves, he tried to stretch a double off the right field wall into a triple with one out and the bases loaded; Chick Fewster, who had been on first, advanced to third base – which was already occupied by Dazzy Vance, who had started from second base but was now caught in a rundown and was dashing back to third. All three of them ended up at third base, with Herman not having watched the play in front of him, and the third baseman, Eddie Taylor, tagged all three just to be sure of getting as many outs as possible. The slow-footed Vance had been a major contributor to this situation, but according to the rules, Vance (as the lead runner, not forced to advance) was entitled to the base, so umpire Beans Reardon called Herman and Fewster out. Thus, Babe Herman was said to have "doubled into a double play";[1] he would later complain that no one remembered that he drove in the winning run on the play. (Hank DeBerry was on third when Vance was on second and Fewster was on first; when Babe got his hit, DeBerry scored.) This led to the following popular joke:
"The Dodgers have 3 men on base!"
"Oh, yeh? Which base?"[2]

Williams suffered from a number of obstacles. First, and most obvious, he played for the Browns/Red Sox in a mostly Yankee-dominated era -- which means both little press and not a whole lot of team support.
He played left field mostly, not a high-value defensive position.
Also, Williams did not even play a full major league season until he was 30. His peak, like his career, was good, but short.
As for the HoF, he's kind of like Dwight Evans. Maybe he should not be in, but to get such a paltry vote seems odd.

His great fastball was history and he was out of the league after only 6 years..although his team did their medical best for him. He was with the same team all 6 of those years. That is King Kong. You're right.
Here's a guy who was a superb pitcher in a career covering 13 years. He was the NL won-lost % leader for 3 straight years at one point in his career and actually once threw two shut outs in a same day double header beating the Dodgers 5-0 and 3-0....the only ML pitcher to ever accomplish this feat. He finished his career with a great 2.28ERA with a .632 won-loss%-BH
