Clevenger could start twice a week for #Cubs. Sveum: "He's probably as good, and to me, one of the best backup catchers in all of baseball."
Looks like Soto may lose some playing time this year to Clevenger. Might help keep Soto healthy though

I think the plan has been for Clevenger to get 60 or so starts which as you said might be for the best because it might keep Soto healthier and fresher. Certainly like Clevenger's bat more than Koyie Hill's.

Anyone better bat then Hill. I was so pissed Quade played him over Castillo last year

Clevenger had a real nice game today. I really wouldn't be surprised if Clevenger ended up with over 60 starts this year.

How valuable is a backup catcher? With so few catchers that give the team a true offensive option would the Cubs benefit from dealing either Soto or Clevenger and picking up another piece to the puzzle? They would likely fetch a very valuable piece.

I think the Cubs would love to deal Soto for a valuable piece, but I think given his down year last year and his injury history his value is way down right now. I think Theo is banking on Soto following his every other year pattern and being able to deal him at the break for something valuable. At which point they would bring up Wellington Castillo and Clevenger would split time with him.

Sounds like a solid plan. Catchers are so hard to build around. With Jesus Montero its fun to dream about the offense and wonder whether he can stay behind the plate. Part of me wants him to be our DH.
I am curious what the value of a good backup catcher is though. Whether a team would benefit from putting a good amount of money into that backup role.

They were talking about this on Sunday. It essentially gives Soto two days off in a row. Not terribly shocking that Clevenger got the start today. I am surprised with how high in the batting order he is today.

Sveum really likes how he hits FB against hard throwers. JJ good guy to play him against. Im just surprised He above Lahair.

Yeah exactly was my thoughts. Perfect day to start Clevenger. I just think it is somewhat telling that LaHair has slipped that far down the order and Clevenger batting that high.

Really, amazing? I like Clevenger, but why do I get the feeling that his true upside is to be a guy like Eli Marrero, a super utility guy that can catch.

He had great start for sure. Reason Cubs are playing Soto right now is try and get his stock up for Trade Deadline.

He basically a AVG type of hitter. Wont hit for much power or draw to many walks. Career .308 hitter in minors so i bet he would hit .280 with maybe 5 HR in MLB if played everyday. Nothing to brag about but qualitity big leaguer

I like that Sveum hasn't been afraid to use Clevenger as a pinch hitter and out in the field. Again I think that his value might be drawn from his verstality versus ever being a starting catcher.

Kind of off base but what u think abotu Sveum so far? I been upset couple of times where he let Stewart stay in to face LHP but then double switches LaHair in 5th? I think he running the pitching staff very well. But some of his lineups have me shaking my head or when what double switches he makes in 5th inning
