Part 1:
Kenesaw Mountain Landis. There are few individuals who are more polarizing in terms of their impact on baseball than Landis. I don't know that he was good for the sport. Certainly, he's one of the key figures responsible for holding the color barrier in place for as long as it was, and he was often heavy in his use of authority. On the other hand, I do wonder if perhaps he was necessary for the sport. I think it's hard for us to understand today on an emotional level the degree to which corruption threatened the game. The PED situation serves as a starting point for the comparison. Now, imagine if MLB had incorporated a zero-tolerance rule back in the 70's when amphetamine use was becoming widespread calling for a lifetime ban for the use of any illegal drugs, and the rule was ignored and never enforced leading up to the steroid era. Additionally, consider that while PED use is a form of dishonesty used to try to WIN games, the corruption leading up to 1920 was a form of dishonesty used to try to LOSE games, which means that the effect on the integrity of the competition was more significant. The corruption of the era was, in a sense, the steroid era on steroids. This was not the case of the league being lax in adopting rules against gambling and game fixing; it was a case of the league doing little to enforce the rules. Landis' hand was heavy at times, probably too heavy, but the culture of corruption was so deep rooted at the time that a harsh hand was needed to attack the problem.

I give him a yes. As much as I don't like voting for him, because I think there's at least as much bad as good, I think his impact on incorporating a higher standard of integrity into the game is important.

Part 2:
Harry Heilmann

Landis-Yes, even though the reasons for a no are understandable, I think he did play a major role in saving baseball when it was needed. I don't agree with everything he did. But I will still give him the nod.
