OK, I think I may have a tough one here....Who is the all-time leader for double plays by a catcher in a season? What year and team was he playing for at the time? This is a defensive question and not DPs he hit into on offense....sort of like a strike out-throw out stealing type of play. If I haven't made that clear please tell me. I would say it's a stat to be proud of.-BH

BobH
11-25-2011, 09:42 AM
...another couple of clues for you...this is from the modern era(post 1901). On the top 10 list he is the only man listed twice(1st and 9th). He was also a very successful manager winning over 1000 games with a .559 winning % and in 14 years he never had a losing season. He won two pennants and a WS along the way....and I think it's safe to say that most of you are not familiar with him..:)-BH

Mudge
11-25-2011, 09:52 AM
I suspect then it was Steve O'Neill (he of the O'Neill baseball family). I know O'Neill, a catcher for the Cleveland Indians had over 30 double plays in the early part of the 20th century.

BobH
11-25-2011, 02:11 PM
That's him, Mudge. Good work! He had 36 for Cleveland in 1916...7 more than the number 2 guy. He also happened to be my dad's first manager(Later Del Baker) with the Tigers. He won the WS for the Tigers in 1945. If you would like to continue this you guys can now just fill in the position of SS into the original question.-BH

No takers on the shortstop question? I thought this might be one right up Mick's alley

BobH
11-28-2011, 02:42 PM
OK....the answer is Rick Burlson 1980 with 149....5 more than the no.2 guy Roy Smalley Jr.in 1979. Smalley held the record for 1 year while Burlson has held it for 31 years.-BH

The best 3rd baseman I ever saw play the game with 4...IMHO, of course.-BH

BobH
11-29-2011, 03:31 PM
The answer, of course, was Brooks Robinson. By way of showing how unique Brooksie was with hitting into 4, only three men ever hit into 3. Can you name them? One of them was a star in his day, but the other two are not as well known. One of those two actually finished his 16 year career well before the advent of the modern era(post 1901). No active ball player today has more than one to his credit.-BH

Which month of the season have the most triple plays been hit?

You were right on the 3 TP guys, Mick...

The month of May....with 130 TPs

Since no one is coming forth....I believe it was Andy Ethebarren in the '66 Series...grounding into a double play to end the 6th inning of game 4. Ron Perranoski replaced Koufax in the 7th. This was a Series where the Dodgers were heavily favored to take it all but the O's jumped up and swept 'em in 4.-BH

BobH
12-03-2011, 06:58 PM
Yep....Cal Jr. is one, biscuit. As Mudge noted, Cobb(2806 with Detroit) isn't one....and neither is Willie Mays(2854 with the Giants). Willie missed most all of the '52 and all of the '53 seasons to military service during Korea or he probably would've made it easily. Brooks Robinson got really close with 2896 games...but not 3000.-BH

soberdennis

I am sure that Williams would have probably come close if it wasn't for two wars, too.
On that note I would guess that Mr. Padre-Tony Gwynn might be one of them.

Mudge
12-04-2011, 05:42 PM
Williams might have reached 3000, but he'd still never had been able to play as many with the Red Sox as this guy did (the all-time career leader of games played with one team).

And, interestingly, one of the four in question did lose an entire year to the war and still managed to play over 3000 games with one team.

soberdennis

How many did Gwynn play for the Pads.
If you are saying one was a Sox player,Yaz or Rice would come to mind.

Mudge

Gwynn played only 2440 games for the Padres.

Estalella is correct....must have found a way to research it. :)

If Duncan had quit after the 2007 season, he would have been #2 on the list. He did have 43 homers with 172 hits at one time during the '07 season.

How exactly does that work?

I just lucked into it, Mudge. You'll notice that jaded28 suggested Earl Wilson's name. Well, I remembered he was a good hitting pitcher and when I checked, sure enough, he had 35 HRs with less than 200 base hits. I had a feeling about Chris Duncan so I simply typed both their names in and Googled them. The site below is the first one that popped up on Google's list.....-BH

I read a story one time told by the equipment manager of the Braves in the 50s. He said that Hank asked him for 44 but the EM questioned it, pointing out that all the great sluggers wore low numbers-Ruth, Gehrig, Greenberg, Musial, Williams, etc. But Aaron insisted on his now famous 44. The EM finished the story by saying "3 times Aaron hit exactly 44 homers in a season. Imagine what he might have done if he asked for 72."

I know Al Kaline hit one off of Lasorda, but I doubt very much that it was Kaline's first. I might have to research this one.

You're right....it wasn't Al. Kaline's first came off the Indians Dave Hoskins in Sept. of 1953. The guy I'm looking for hit his first in May of 1956.-BH

Hint: 2 of these teams have never even played in the World Series.

Your right nebo86. I completely forgot about the Padres, Rays and Brewers.

Your turn to ask a question (if you so desire)

My guess would be Addie Joss...who to my knowledge is the only pitcher with over 2000 innings pitched to post a WHIP of less than 1.00 (0.97)-BH

I mentioned the other day that I didn't remember Joe Christopher as a member of the Red Sox. So, speaking of Joe Christopher, he got only one hit as a member of the Sox. Who did he get the hit off of?

Yeah, it was Sewell. This from Wiki-
According to his obituary published in the New York Times, he played his entire Major League career using only one bat, which he kept in shape by rubbing with a Coke bottle and seasoning with chewing tobacco.
