Not much going on in the Mariners forum so I figured I would see what I could get going. What better way to do that than our offseason wish list?
For me there are two directions I would like to go. First I would actually like to sign Prince Fielder or attempt to trade for Joey Votto. Neither is likely to happen so I will give you my realistic list.
Chris Snyder, C: At the very least Snyder gives us a solid 60-40 split behind the plate and if all goes well he could actually take the starting job away from Olivo, who shouldn't have been given the job in the first place.
Bruce Chen, SP: A scouting friend pointed out that Chen could actually have quite a bit of success in the spacious confines of Safeco Field and I think he is worth a flyer. Shouldn't cost much either compared to other starters on the market.
Jonathan Broxton, RP: Most people don't look at our pen and see much of a need but I feel we would be better off adding one more arm and taking a chance with Broxton could pay off in a big way. Wilhelmson, League, Lueke and Kelley should form a solid core though so this isn't a must sign.
Reed Johnson, OF: Solid bat who could backup all three OF spots and fill in if Guttierez doesn't bounce back. We could really use this type of bat off the bench as well.
Jamie Moyer, SP: This signing would be more for the off the field talent than anything else. I think he will do a solid job in Safeco but I want this guy coaching our young pitchers and on the coaching staff when he retires. Its time to bring him back.
As you can see I think we should sign a variety of role players to support the team we have in place right now. If a deal for Fielder falls through this is the route I would go. It stays within our budget and allows the kids to continue to grow.
1. Ichiro Suzuki, RF
2. Dustin Ackley, 2B
3. Mike Carp, DH
4. Justin Smoak, 1B
5. Casper Wells, LF
6. Chris Snyder/Miguel Olivo, C
7. Kyle Seager, 3B
8. Franklin Guttierez, CF
9. Brendan Ryan, SS
Not the most potent offense but its a step in the right direction.
1. Felix Hernandez, RHP
2. Michael Pineda, RHP
3. Jason Vargas, LHP
4. Bruce Chen, LHP
5. Blake Beaven, RHP
Solid but unspectacular rotation until the likes of Paxton and Hultzen prove they are ready. You could win the division with that group in my opinion.
CL - Brandon League, RHP
SU - Tom Wilhelmsen, RHP
SU - Cesar Jimenez, LHP
MR - Jonathan Broxton, RHP
MR - Josh Lueke, RHP
MR - Shawn Kelley, RHP
MR - Charlie Furbush, LHP
This would be the strength of the team. Furbush could be a solid starter at some point but I think his true calling is in the pen. We would also have guys like Ruffin and Cortes ready to go in Tacoma.
