On a team long known for its hitting, one man stands out as the top pitcher in Pittsburgh Pirate history over the last 60 years. That is Vern Law, who won 162 games for the Bucs.
His best year was easily the World Championship year of 1960. That year he won 20 games, led the NL in complete games, and won the Cy Young Award. He also won two games in the World Series and was in large part responsible for keeping the Pirates in the series while his teammates were being pummeled by the Yankee bats.
After winning only 12 games in 1964, Law came back to win 17 in 1965 and was the first recipient of the Sporting News NL Comeback Player of the Year Award.
He retired after the 1967 season. His son Vance later played in the Majors.
A devout Mormon, Law lives in Provo, Utah where he is baseball coach at Provo High School. Vance is the coach at Brigham Young University across the street.
