i was just browsing on the internet and i came across Gary Sheffields statistics page, looked at his numbers and was impressed, but looking at his page made me think about something.... gary sheffield played for 8 different teams in career, throughout his entire career he never really had a place he could call home... when you think of gary sheffield.. you cant really pin him down to one team .. he spent near equal amounts of time with a lot of different teams ... im having trouble thinking of other players who put up career numbers like his while floating around the league from team to team as much as he did .... anybody got any names to throw out there ?

I loved his stint with the Dodgers....

Blyleven showed how difficult it is to be elected to the HoF when you move around so much.
Rickey Henderson played for a squat load of teams in his career (10 to be exact) though he did spend most of his time in Oakland.

another thing to keep in mind if your talking about sheffield and at the hall of fame.. is that he was mentioned in the mitchell report

To bad he wasn't playing for the Red Sox, Rangers or Brewers when that bogus report came out.

To be honest I can't remember him playing for other teams than the Yankees, Dodgers and Marlins.

Not as much as Sheffield but another guy I thought of is Rusty Staub. Houston, Montreal, Mets, Tigers, Mets again. Even spent some time in Texas.

Is there a way to look up players with similar stats on the net, without knowing them by heart?

The best thing to to is this:
1. Click into Baseball Reference (http://www.baseball-reference.com/)
2. Type in the players first and last name in the white box on the upper left.
3. Click search
4. (4A) A list of players with that name will appear (major leaguers in the left column, minor leaguers in the right). (4B) Sometimes it goes directly to the players's home page, depending on the name.
5. If 4A, lick on the name of the player you want. (it will end up here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sheffga01.shtml) at his home page.
6. scroll down past all the player's yearly statistics to a section entitled "similarity scores."

Staub is a good comparison, though Staub's numbers are not quite as strong overall (63.3 WAR for Sheffield as compared to 45.2 for Le Grand Orange.) Sheffield was generally considered a defensive liability; never once did his have a plus WAR while playing in the field.
Ruben Sierra too (9 different teams in 20 years in the bigs)

Thanks Mudge.
I think that Fred McGriff is a good comparison. Six teams in a nineteen year career.

McGriff too is a good comparison (and with his 50.5 WAR, he'll definitely struggle to make the HoF).

Gary Sheffields attitude will keep him out of the HOF as well. He was one of those guys who was so surly at times, even accusing Joe Torre of racism, I just don't see him going into the Hall.

I have never really liked the guy because of his attitude.
But hey, Ruth was far from a role model, but he got in. Same with Mantle.

Well at my age, when I think of Gary Sheffield, I honestly only think of the Yankees and Tigers.

It is actually funny to see when he started his MLB career, you weren't even born yet.

I don't know why but the first team that came to mind was the Mets. His last team before he retired? Speaking of Sheffield's statistics, did he swear that his stats got better when he cut out of his night life and smoking cigarettes? These ball players party like rock stars when they are in other cities.
