With all the press about the resurgence of the Pirates, and as a corollary to RickD's post on Fan disappointment ranking, I decided to look even more closely at the least successful franchises of the free agency era (technically 1976 on).

1. I rank them by their last post-season appearance.

EXPOS/NATIONALS: 1981
ROYALS: 1986
PIRATES: 1992
BLUE JAYS: 1993
BROWNS/ORIOLES: 1997

2. Then by the number of post-season series (DS, CS, WS) since the wild card was formally instituted in 1995 (that makes a total of 80 different possible post-season series; therefore 48 possible post-season series a team from either the AL or the NL could be involved in)

EXPOS/NATIONALS: 0
ROYALS: 0
PIRATES: 0
BLUE JAYS: 0
PILOTS/BREWERS: 1

3. By the last time the team was ever IN the World Series:

EXPOS/NATIONALS: never (franchise established in 1969)
MARINERS: never (club established in 1977)
CUBS: 1945
PIRATES: 1979
PILOTS/BREWERS: 1982
BROWNS/ORIOLES: 1983
ROYALS: 1985
DODGERS: 1988
A'S: 1990
REDS: 1990
TWINS: 1991

4. Teams that have NEVER won a World Series (year in which franchise began playing)

SENATORS/RANGERS (1961)
ASTROS (1962)
EXPOS/NATIONALS (1969)
PILOTS/BREWERS (1969)
PADRES (1969)
MARINERS (1977)
ROCKIES (1993)
RAYS (1998)

5. Teams that have not won the World Series in over 100 years

CUBS (1908)

CUBS (1908)Really nice post Mudge. I never realized that there are so many other franchises that are in the same losing funk as the Orioles. I personally feel that pitching has a lot to do with several of those teams franchise as it certainly does for the Orioles the past several years. The Pirates are now successful because of the resurgence of there pitching and they will live and die with it.

The Expos really got screwed in 94, when they were winning the NL East at the time of the strike, and had arguably the best team in the National League at the time.

Thanks to luck which is a very big part for baseball, I'm still surprised that the Rockies made it to the 07 WS. It's like following two different teams with the home/road splits. This years splits on BA are .280/.230 and it isn't just Coors Field that is a factor, it's also going to sea level every road trip.
