View Full Version : Thinking of changing my allegiance back the Orioles

I have been thinking and looking back to all the great highlights I have experienced with the Orioles even as a kid in the late 70's(1979 Orioles World Series vs. Pirates), the 80's(1983 World Champs). Cal Ripken Jr's. entire career and Eddie Murray's 500th HR. Yes, there have been more bad years, but I just can't seem to get the Black & Orange out of my mind. Even the thoughts of the 21 game losing streak in 1988 and this current losing streak of 9 now. So I ask you should I go back on to the Orioles or stay a Nationals fan that I don't have those memories now, but could develop some?

What made you change from an O's fan to a Nationals fan? Go with what you want, but stick with what you choose next...it makes things a whole lot better.

When in doubt, go with Boston.

Well I went through this earlier this season. I made the switch and although it is real frustrating now because the Astros are bad I feel real good about it.

The Orioles have a great history and an amazing ballpark. The problem is that they are stuck in the AL East which is real tough to be in.

Go with your gut and if their style of play appeals to you go for it.

Thanks guys. I am going with the history and back to the Orioles as you can see by my new siggy and avatar and Favorite team and player.

I went through this when I moved down here from Cleveland...but I made my choice and I'm not going back. I still love to watch the Tribe when I can but I've never contemplated a change.

Scoobean, no offense but when you change allegiance that easy, only one word comes up to my mind: fair weather fan (ok, three words ;) ), even though there's no fair weather in Baltimore lately...

If you are from or near DC, I can understand that you started to root for the Nats. You have been an O's fan from the beginning, so why can't you root for both the Nats and the O's?

The Yankees are my nr. 1 team, but I also root for the M's, Braves and Rays.

YBF: I will still root for the Nats, but my #1 team will be the Orioles. I actually live closer to Camden Yards than Nationals Park. I actually live closer to the Phillies Stadium than Nationals Park. I will not stop rooting for the Nats though.

If you live closer to Camden Yards, why did you start to root for the Nats?

If you live closer to Camden Yards, why did you start to root for the Nats?Basically because of the way the management(GM, Owner) was handling the club.

I see. Just keep in mind that Angelo's reign will come to an end some day. Things can only get better.

I hope so. I don't mind Andy McPhail as GM or Vice President of Operations, but I still think he doesn't have the last say in baseball matters.

Scoobean.

I can empathize -- in more ways than one -- and maybe my story will help you as you work through this dilemma.

I grew up with the Red Sox. Started following them in 1960 at the age of 7. Loved them (still do).

When the Expos came into the National League, for a number of good reasons I decided that they would be my NL team, and I rooted for them and for Boston as usual.

Then in 1980, the Red Sox management, which was a bunch of idiots to begin with, unceremoniously dumped two of my favorite players: Fisk and Burleson, and I was so angry (and I was not the only Red Sox fan who was angry, but I admit I had some special reasons too) that I washed my hands of the team and devoted most of my energies to following the Expos.

And while Montreal was dealt a shit sandwich (several times I might add from several different dealers too -- pardon the pun, which ybf will surely understand), I never regretted my years devoted to them, as hard as some of those years were (read: 1994).

Meanwhile, I always kept the Red Sox close to my heart, even if I tried not to.

Well, you know what happened to the Expos, and you know what happened to the Red Sox.

The bottom line is: I think there are legitimate reasons why you were disgusted with the Orioles and why you might well have adopted the Nats when they dropped in from the north. If you are like me, you'll always be true to you first love -- you'll be an Orioles fan at heart -- but there's nothing wrong with a legal separation if the situation warrants. And a reconciliation.

Anyway, I like having an AL team and an NL team.

GO BREWERS!

Mudge: Thanks for that great post. It really made me think I am doing the correct thing. Like you said I can still follow the Nats as I will as my NL team. My first true love of a team has always been the Orioles and even if , God forbid they move out of the area I would still follow the team.

All I can think now is you are truly Nik Nak. Not her step father. You made a donation as Nik Nak under the name of Scott Hurd and that's who you are now. I truly believe Scott Hurd has always been Nik Nak.

Nik Nak is my step daughter like I said. Corey like I said if you want me to prove who I am then skype with me and you will see I am who I claim to be not my step daughter who no longer lives here. I can prove it just skype with me for a minute. I know she made the donation with my credit card. I allowed her to.

I'm going to do that for sure when I get back in town so I can get some peace of mind. I always thought Nik Nak was either a 40 year old man pretending to be a woman. Others have felt the same, too.

Looking for clarification.

Please do. I want you to have that peace of mind. I have done nothing but help this forum out with new threads and ideas and have been in almost all the discussions on here. My Skype account is under my wifes name and email address 4hurds@gmail.com.

The heart or gut. I use to tell friends that I was an equal Yankees/Cardinals fan, when I was a kid. Then in the 64 WS when they played each other, I found out that the Yankees were my #1 team and remained so until Colorado got the Rockies.

The Orioles and I as a fan have so many memories from sitting out at Memorial Stadium in the bleachers with my older brother and Grandfather to my Grandfather when I was about 17 paid for 12 hotdogs for me to eat. It became a contest of sorts after about the 5th hot dog.

Never once thought that for a second, also never really thought about it though or cared to be honest.

On the topic. I'm not really sure it matters who you cheer for overall unless the two teams are playing head to head. Personally every game I watch I almost always pick a team I want to win. Guess there is the issue of which team do you watch predominately, but channel flipping/side by side mlb.tv fixes that right up. Given, this is coming from a person that has never considered switching teams, so take out of it what you will.

You also can hybrid your signature an favorite team icon too, one O's and one Nats. Could look interesting to say the least. Either way, I see now you have picked to go back to an O's fan, so have fun with that!

Nothing wrong with rooting for both.

As you can tell, I have a similar allegiance.

I will continue to root on the Nationals and hope for there success, but the Orioles will remain my #1.
