View Full Version : Should fans 'boo' their own players?

Booing has become somewhat of a tradition in cities like Philadelphia and New York. Wasn't it just last year when Derek Jeter got off to a faulty start and was asked how he felt about being booed at Yankee Stadium? I remember he responded by saying "If I were them, I'd boo me too".
A lot of fans feel that because they spend good money on baseball tickets, they have a right to boo their own players. Sure, they have the right. But does that make it right? Personally, I think it depends on the player. Some players respond well to being booed. Maybe it gets them motivated to work harder to improve they're skills. Others, it may effect the exact opposite.
When Jeff Suppan was a Milwaukee Brewer, he was booed every single time he took the mound. To be honest, It made me feel really bad for the guy. He was actively involved in the community in Milwaukee and helped with charities across the state. He was a really nice man, and the fans treated him like dirt.

I don't like it when fans boo an individual player, but I think it's OK to show dissatisfaction in the whole team if things are going VERY badly. I put an emphasis on that because I think things should have to be pretty bad for boos to start to come out, but I don't mind if they do if it's for the entire team. I just don't like when fans disrespect a single player.

Fans have a right to cheer/boo whomever they wish when they pay for a ticket but I think it is in poor taste to boo your home team!

Other fans can do as they please, but I've always been one to cheer for the home team and boo the opposition. That's what home field advantage is all about.

The only player that was on the team I liked that I booed was Jose Canseco when he was on the Yankees (when I liked them).
As a Buffalo Bills fan there are plenty of times to boo a player on my team but I have a hard time doing it so I don't. I have been known to cheer louder when that player is taken out of the game (for poor play not injury) and their replacement comes in.

if i pay 30 bucks to go to a game and the product i see plays like little leaguers, then i have the right to boo. Do i boo my own players? No, i do not. I would rather boo the umpires or Carlos Beltran. I think booing is fine because i think it shows the players that we, as fans, care about what is going on. Sometimes they need to hear that from someone other than the coaches or teammates.

Dan Uggla got booed at the Ted a few nights ago and I was in full support.

I think if you pay the price for a ticket and are going for the enjoyment of the games so you should be able to boo and cheer anyone you want.

I am not sure if this thread was questioning fans right to boo. I think it is intended to find out if you think it is right to boo a player on your favorite team.
Maybe I am wrong.

I try not to boo any players. The most respect an opposing player can give your team, is 100% effort to beat you. The longer I follow the game, the less I boo. I save the hate for some of the crappy owners and the smoke blowing politicking that goes on in the game.
I did yell E-9 pretty loud this last Sunday at Francoeur. Rather irk them, then boo them.

If you're going to insult an opposing player, at least come up with something clever to say rather than 'boo'. It makes you sound illiterate.

I would never boo a home team guy..............I'd rather kidnap his family and hold them for ransom. Sure it puts a bit of pressure on them to perform better but in the end it all works out. They get their family back and I get some ransom money to spend at a future game, plus I can scout out the next guy who screws up.

I don't think I've boo'd any of teams players. Although, I might have boo'd Juan Uribe. You can all guess why.

I'm not for booing any player -- home team or visitor.
But I'd certainly boo Jeffrey Loria if he ever made an appearance -- home or away. Come to think of it, I'd boo a lot of the owners.

I think Japanese fans are a perfect example for US fans. In Japan they never boo a player of their own team. Not even of opposing teams. If a player of their own team sucks, the worst that can happen is that the stadium don't cheer on him and becomes silent.

Yes, the silent treatment is customary over there -- the cold shoulder if you will. Strangely effective.
