A day marked by one of the most famous boners of all time.
In 1905, Ty Cobb hits his first homerun
In 1908, as a teammate crosses home plate with what appears to be the winning run, Giant rookie Fred Merkle heads to the clubhouse without touching second base. Cub second baseman Johnny Evers calls for the ball, touches second, and Merkle is called out. The game is declared a tie and will be played later. It eventually costs the Giants the pennant.
In 1949, a day after they were eliminated from the race, the Indians hold a ceremony burying the 1948 Pennant.
In 1957, the Braves become the first non New York team to win the NL pennant in 7 years.
In 1969, John Miller hits a homer in his last MLB at bat. He had also homered in his first at bat.
Also in 1969, Carl Yastrzemski hits his 200th homer.
In 1979, Lou Brock steals his 938th base, breaking Billy Hamilton's record.
In 1983, Steve Carlton wins his 300th game.
In 1984, Sparky Anderson becomes the first manager to win 100 games in both leagues.
In 1988, Jose Canseco becomes the first player to have 40 homers and 40 steals in the same season.
In 1996, the Braves win their 5th consecutive division title.
In 1998, the Yankees win their 110th game tying the 1927 team for most in franchise history.
In 2000, Rafael Palmeiro hits his 400th homer.
In 2006, Barry Bonds hits his 734th homer, an new NL record.
In 2007, the Nationals play the last game at RFK Stadium.
In 2009, Mike Mussina wins his 250th game.
Also in 2009, Bobby Cox signs a one year contract to manage the Braves in 2010, and announces it will be his last.

Ha Ha Merkle....bet he was a favorite Cub player for a long time!

It always seems like late in the season is when most of the memorable history moments happen. And that Merkle incident was pretty funny.
