For me there's no contest whatsoever when it comes to pure enjoyment and playing. I might be a sucker for old school games as well, just looking at the main screen gives me goosebumps of my childhood

You hit the nail on the head. Very very fun game. For being so old and to go back and play this game it's still a really good baseball game. Sure, the game is pixelated, but it's actually solid for it's era and realistic for it's era. I was a big fan of All-Star Baseball '99 on the N64 as well. World Series 2K Baseball was amazing on the Dreamcast...As for new school. MLB The Show is absolutely mind blowing!! Multiple people have walked in on me and said, "wtf, it's baseball season?" then realize there is a controller in my hand.

I am 100% with you, although on a later date: the N64 game sucked so many hours of my life away drafting Griffey and Jay Buhner and having home run races over the course of a season, forever trying to hit grand slams with Randy Johnson (happened once!), and never actually finishing a season because a 15 year old loses interest quickly when girls get in the way. As for new school, I do enjoy the 2K games and am still trying to get my hands on another copy of 2K10 after my last one stopped working!

I'm 16 so this may be a bit surprising, but I used to have a Sega Genesis and this was the first baseball game I ever played.

Closest I can come is throwing darts on the other side of the dart board where the baseball game was.

As far as old school games go, Baseball Simulator 1.000 for Nintendo was awesome!

Then MVP and High Heat were good too.

But right now, I thoroughly enjoy the MLB The Show games. Just got 11 last week and it's awesome!

Nintendo - Two series stand out for me, RBI Baseball and Baseball Stars.

Sega Saturn - This console didn't stick around for long, but World Series Baseball was a really good game.

Playstation and PS2 - EA Sports' MVP series (formerly Triple Play) was the gold standard. It was unfortunate that they lost out on licensing rights, because they were clearly the best at the time. I don't know if this is still current, but I believe the rights are available again after the 2012 season. You would have to think that the sports gaming giant would shell out some big bucks for this. For years after they stopped coming out with new games, I continued to play MVP 2005 on my PC.... kept fresh by a hardcore group of guys whose hobby was producing new content for the game. I only stopped playing because I crossed over to Apple products a couple years ago.

*EA continued the platform in the form of college baseball for a couple years, but it just didn't have the same amount of demand.

PS3 - MLB: The Show has picked up where MVP left off. I must admit that I don't have a lot of experience with 2K products, but I can't imagine it being any better than The Show. The "Road to the Show" format is awesome. The only real competition it might get is if EA Sports starts coming out with MVP games again.

LP2... I played a few of the 2K baseball games, and they were atrocious!

It's not because i'm some kind of The Show "fanboy" or anything either. Back a few years ago, they kept delaying the release of the Show repeatedly, and it didn't come out for almost a month into the baseball season. I was so fed up waiting for it, I downloaded the demo of 2K and I hated it. To the point that I'd have rather played no baseball than play 2K, and that was when I was fed up with giving The Show a chance with their incessant delays. I was literally giving 2K a chance to impress and they failed miserably.

I used to be a huge MVP (Triple Play) fan, and loved them, but if they ever return, I can't think of anything they can do at this point that would surpass what The Show offers. I think they'd be hard-pressed to even MATCH it. The new analog controls are neat too, although I've defaulted to classic for now.

Road To The Show is cool, but am not a big fan of it. I just can't get into it, but then again, I've only tried it a couple times. I normally stick to Franchise and the Homerun Derby is cool too.

I almost forgot about High Heat!! A very, very well done game right there.... It presumably folded due to EA Sports' large market share at the time. It really advanced the gameplay in my opinion.

All-Star Baseball was another one in the early part of the 2000's that was pretty good. I remember that it had an awful lot of content, but the gameplay wasn't even close to High Heat.

I found this website for baseball video games.... check it out!

they are an absolute embrassment to the game of baseball

as far as modern games go, MVP 05 was the last baseball game i enjoyed playing

"The Show" is the best out there right now, but i still think that the MVP series was better in it's heyday

Oh, the Show IS the best out there right now, and I LOVED MVP, but I think the Show has actually gained a lot of ground on the MVP series. Matter of fact, I find a lot of similarities between The Show and the old MVP games. Controls, the feel of the game, it's almost gotten to the point that it feels like I'm still playing MVP.

I loved High Heat too... it fell second to MVP, but rightfully so.... the graphics, and controls were GREAT on MVP, High Heat had the edge in realism. If you simmed a season of High Heat, you'd see a homerun leader finishing with 42-43-44 Homeruns, strikeout leaders would lead the league with about 240, etc... and the standings, if you simmed a season 20 times, you'd be lucky to see a couple teams toggle back and forth in the standings.

Oh, and you gotta love the feature that allows you to charge the mound! lol They didn't show the fight, you just see a bunch of people rushing out of a dugout from a camera that looked like it was from the Goodyear blimp, and next thing you know, ONLY your batter is ejected and you're being asked to replace him. Hehe

I just can't wrap my head around why The Show isn't made for 360...I'm so sick of playing the 2K games!!! 2K makes amazing basketball games, so why on earth can't they make good baseball games!?!

The Show, like Gran Turismo are produced by Sony. Those two games are the main reason I have a PS3, and have not looked back... :)

The hockey games used to be good too. And football wasn't bad, it was competitive with Madden for a while there...

They seemed to hold the quality on basketball, but let the rest go to hell.. :-(

I haven't played many video games, but the best I have ever played was High Heat Baseball. The most awesome feature of that game was that you could play games in long gone ballparks like the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field.

Yeah you can do that in MLB 2K9 but it's just a shame that it was such a bad game in terms of gameplay.

Yes!!! Although I'm 27 so it's less surprising... but still, this was my first favorite baseball game! Loved it.

Also, in chronological order of my other favorites:

World Series Baseball II for Sega Saturn! I was up night & day during Summer vacation playing this game. It stood as my favorite for nearly 10 years, until...

The last good 3rd party MLB game, and the best to ever come from EA Sports. My favorite game since WSBII for the Saturn, which came out in '96.

Ha Ha! This was definitely my first Baseball "game" also.

This probably doesn't count as a video game either, but my favorite Baseball themed game was definitely "Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball" which was a pinball game. It was awesome, with a baseball field in the center which featured a Baseball glove that moved back and forth across the top of the outfield fence, potentially "robbing" homeruns. Every once in awhile you see one of these still around. If you do, treat yourself to a game or two.

I have been playing baseball games forever. I think the two best in the past have to be:
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr82/wcs71401/hardball-3_200x200.jpg and http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr82/wcs71401/highheat_boxshot.jpg

Of course now MLB The Show series is my favorite. But there was something about those other two. I am talking about the PC version of them. Seemed like you could really edit things and to the best of my knowledge High Heat was one of the first games to incorporate the minors and they used census records so there were so many real names they used which just added to it. The gameplay was also really good too.
